Mysterious painting

Allgäuer Strauss in ceramic vase
Oil on painting board, original frame,
around 1960, signed,
imensions with frame 59.6x46.5 / 49.5x36 cm

The painting belonged to the Estate of the 98 year old Mrs. Frommer. She was the wife of the longtime Marketing manager of the Dethleffs caravan factory.
The painting had its place of honor in the living room Frommer family. The Frommers had no children as heirs. Mr. Roland Wierer was with the Frommer family friends for many years; he inherited the painting.

At first glance, the work appears as a painting by the artist recognized: The theme of the meadow flowers in the ceramic vase and the frame correspond to her other pictures.

At a second look you can find the signature: bottom left on the front in large Latin letters.

After her tumor operation, the artist had on Head also last painting signed with FDE. She repainted her surgery soon stopped painting because her hand was too much trembled. She then devoted herself to art technique: collages.

Surprise: on the back of the painting we find a sketch by the artist: probably intended as a work for her children's book, on which she worked from 1921-1923. Unfortunately they are only published single pages. The sketch corresponds to one older picture that we found in her estate: The Saint Anthony tells the stories from the Bible to a girl.

The drawing is signed with 'F. Dethleffs-Edelmann ”. This is surprising again: the artist normally did not sign any of her unfinished works Perhaps she will have this signature after her mariage in 1931 practiced with her new name. It fits that the artist has kept almost everything - including unfinished sketches and paintings.

She started painting again after her head operation. She was always thrifty. Why shouldn't she put it on the front the old sketch her picture "Allgäuer Strauss in the ceramic vase" have painted? Is the picture one of the last oil paintings by Fridel Dethleffs-Edelmann? We do not know it. But the explanation could be true..
